For clients of Svetlova LLP in central London, investor visas are one of the most popular ways of settling in the UK. The advantages are clear:
There are no restrictions on staying in the UK
You do not need to pass the English language test
There are no limits on what you can do in the UK: you can work or study
To get an investor visa, you need net assets of at least £2 million.
What you can do with an investor visa (tier 1)
Invest £2,000,000 or more in UK government bonds, share capital or loan capital in active and trading UK registered companies
Work or study
Apply to settle after 2 years if you invest £10 million
Apply to settle after 3 years if you invest £5 million
What you can’t do with an investor visa (tier 1)
Invest in companies that are mainly concerned with property investment, management or development
Work as a professional sports person or sports coach
Get access to public funds
Investing £250,000 in property
Once you have shown that you have access to £1,000,000 to invest in the UK, you are allowed to invest £750,000 into government bonds or other authorised investments. £250,000 can be invested in residential property in the UK, which should be your own home and be free from any mortgage. You are unable to invest in off-plan property
Timing of the investment
The investment of at least £750,000 must be made within three months of the grant of your visa. This time limit is important: non-compliance will jeopardise your application for further leave to remain and the Home Office can limit your right to enter the UK.
Where can you apply from?
Unless you are switching from another visa category, you should apply from your home country. Svetlova LLP will make the application on your behalf electronically.
