To claim ILR after five years, you must have been on the same visa for at least five years. However, if you stay in the UK on different valid visas for 10 years, you can apply for ILR via the 10-year long residency route. These can be in any immigration category, or a combination of different immigration categories.

To qualify for the 10-year residency route, you must have had continuous residence (with no breaks in between your visas) in the UK for 10 years. You are also not allowed to have spent more than 180 days (at one time) away from the UK and no more than 540 days outside of the UK during the entire 10-year period.

Your 10-year qualifying period starts from either:

  • when you arrived in the UK with a visa

  • when you were given permission to stay in the UK

Documents you must provide

You will need to provide:

  • a current passport or other valid travel ID

  • your biometric residence permit if you have one

  • all the passports you’ve held during your time in the UK

  • your police registration certificate if you have one

  • 2 passport sized colour photographs

  • Life in the UK test certificate

  • Proof that you meet an English language requirement

  • a certified translation of any documents that aren’t in English or Welsh.

You may need to provide additional documents depending on your circumstances.

We will be happy to assist you with ILR applications. If you are considering applying for an Indefinite Leave to Remain, please contact Tatiana Svetlova tsvetlova@svetlovallp.com.
