26.04.2016 To own or to Rent?
In 2016 young and middle aged people are more likely to rent than to own a property with a mortgage. According to the Office for National Statistics today over 40% rent privately. This is in contrast to the early 80’s where only 14% of people were renting.
In other words, today people are twice as likely to rent then than to own. In addition, the number of people who own properties without a mortgage has increased substantially, indicating that sophisticated investors are capitalising on the opportunity to invest in the property market. The trend is clear and suggests investment opportunities, not perhaps in terms of rental yields but for capital growth and preservation purposes.
