22 October 2015. Recent changes to legislation: landlords must install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Starting from 01 October 2015 the landlords are required by law to install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every floor of their property. At the start of every new tenancy the landlords must check that the alarms are in a good working order. Failure to do that can entail up to a £5,000 civil penalty.

The new law also imposes obligation on tenants to check that alarms in their rented property are in working order at least once a month during their tenancy.
